Intellectual Property

Have you heard of a term called “Intellectual Property”? Intellectual Property (IP) is something you are creating whether you are a songwriter composing a song , an author writing a book, a painter of portraits or even an inventor of new technologies. IP is defined as any creation/product of the mind. Intellectual Property is protected by law and allows the creators to enjoy the financial benefit of their creations. So you can see that any artist would be wise to educate themselves regarding IP and how it relates to the arts. Although the finer details of Intellectual Property will vary from country to country, the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) has a wonderful YouTube playlist to help you get started. Another resource is the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and is a ‘Global Forum” for IP. Canada is a member of WIPO but the United States is not. The United States Patent and Trademark Office deals with IP in the United States. You will find these resources helpful to understand what IP is and how it impacts you and most businesses around the world. Be sure to research your own country's IP office as well if you are outside of Canada or the United States. Enjoy!
