We recently brought to your attention the idea that musical works can have two copyrights. A copyright for the actual song and a separate copyright for the actual recording of that same song. The insight we are sharing is that each of those copyrights have royalties attached to them as revenue streams. Knowing which copyright will generate a particular royalty ensures that you are aware of those revenue streams and that awareness keeps money in your pocket. Registering with your territory’s various royalty collection societies is part of the process you must incorporate into your business of making music. In the coming weeks will look at Performance Royalties, Mechanical Royalties and Neighbouring Rights. Enjoy!
