Understanding the royalty aspect of the music industry is important to an artist. It all comes down to financial well being. Artists want to be able to sustain a comfortable living while they create content they love. Here's the insight for this blog: It is highly recommended to educate yourself and be knowledgable of where these royalties come from and what you are entitled to as a creator of musical works. Performance Royalties come from the public performance of music via radio, television, film, during live concerts, satellite radio and online streaming. Your territory’s Performing Rights Organization (PRO) will collect these royalties from blanket license fees that businesses, venues and broadcasters must pay if they are playing music publicly. Again the PRO in Canada is SOCAN. The USA has ASCAP, BMI and SESAC. Did you know that in Canada you can also get a royalty if you play your own music live in a club or venue? The requirement is that the admission charge must be a minimum of $6 CAD and you must submit a Notification Live Music Performance (NLMP) within one year of the performance date. Not all territories will have this perk but it is worth finding out either way from your own PRO. Once more it is imperative that you as an artist know what royalties you are entitled to when engaging the music business. There are many stories where artists are taken advantage of because they just didn’t know. These days it is important to be assertive and proactive because the revenue aspect of music industry is constantly changing and getting leaner. Know what monies you are entitled to. Most of all, help to spread the knowledge so we can help each other. Talk about this with your bandmates and/or clients. Register with your PRO! Enjoy!
